Get Ready to Register...
If you have seen our lovely flyer for the upcoming NCTE Northwest Regional Conference, Asking the Right Questions: Engaging Today's Learners, you may have noticed that the registration opening date is listed as May 1st (as it did here on the website until just recently). Registration WILL be open by May 15th so get set, think about which colleagues you may convince to come along with you, and check back here after the 15th for the link.
Are YOU in an LSA? Let Us Know!
Local Specialist Associations (LSAs) are a great way to stay connected with colleagues in the long months between conferences. Do you have an LSA in your district? BCTELA would like to promote the activities of these local groups and make contact information available for other interensted teachers. Don't have an LSA? Did you know that BCTELA has start-up grants? Ask us!

Asking the Right Questions: Engaging Today’s Learners
October 22-24, 2009
BCTELA is pleased to announce that our 2009 annual conference will be a NCTE Regional Conference to be held at the newly renovated Delta Burnaby Hotel.
This four day conference will feature leading speakers like Jeff Wilhelm, Faye Brownlie, Davis Booth and Sharon Jerosky. A special feature of this conference will be a day of workshops and presentations by university educators and researchers.
Navigating English Language Arts in the 21st Century
We had a great time at the conference. The new Saturday institutes were a great success!
For those who were there, we hope you enjoyed your sessions. It was wonderful to meet old and new friends and, together, to explore the ideas and discuss the challenges facing English Language Arts in the 21st Century.
For our members who were unable to make it, perhaps you'll find a moment to chat to a colleague and continue the conversation. We hope to see you next year (It's a big one!).
Welcome to our NEW WEBSITE!
Part of navigating English Language Arts in the 21st century is learning to navigate through new digital texts. BCTELA has joined the party with this, our new website. Take a look around.
We are slowly adding select articles from back and current issues of our journal, English Practice (formerly Update), and other publications. We are building what we hope will be an indespensible resource for the latest in teaching ideas as well as an inspiring online community.
Have you received your new copy of English Practice?
English Practice vol 50 issue 2 hit the stands (your desks) mid-October! If your membership is still current you should have received your copy. There are many interesting articles in this new issue: share the joy of an elementary book exchage, peruse some useful student writing rubrics, and come along as we 'step into technology.'
