-developing critical literacy through oral language
-conducting literary conversations that include all learners
-using brain research to stimulate powerful learning
-increasing the students' role in accessing and using feedback

BCTELA speaker faye brownlie

Faye Brownlie is a staff development consultant, teacher and author. Faye is passionate about teaching diverse learners in inclusive settings, in developing assessments that support learning, and in collaborative teaching partnerships. Her most recent book is It's All About Thinking, co-authored with Leyton Schnellert (Portage and Main Press).

As Research Director, at Horizon Research & Evaluation Inc., she undertakes contracted research, consulting and professional devleopment for educational organizations. She is a well-known author of student and teacher resources, including Literacy in Action.

Kathleen Gregory (BA MEd) has more than 30 years experience teaching students K-12 and is currently an instructor for literacy and assessment courses at the University of Victoria. Kathleen has assisted many school districts in developing their own approaches to conferencing, report writing and authentic assessment strategies. She is a co-author of Voices of Experience Series (Portage and Main Press) and a consultant for Pearson
Education's Literacy In Action Series.

For over thirty years Susan Close has led action research projects focused on enhancing K-12 literacy learning. Practices growing out of the projects have been featured in many books, articles and presentations. Findings from the research led to the development of SmartLearning, a framework designed to lead all learners to richer thinking and deeper understanding. In May 2008 Susan was awarded the CERA Todd Rogers Award for leadership in evidence-based research.
